Innovation doesn’t start with technology. It starts with curiosity. That’s why we teamed up with the University of Northampton and invited a group of computing students to take part in a two-day hackathon focused on building real digital experiences.
With support from Mark Johnson, Deputy Head of Computing at the University of Northampton, we welcomed students into a live agency setting. We gave them everything they’d need to take on a real client challenge: a clear brief, brand guidelines, product data, and role-play interviews with our team. With hands-on support throughout, they had the freedom to explore ideas, solve problems, and lead the work themselves.
The Brief: Create a Journey, Not Just a Storefront
Their challenge? Create an online journey for a fictional jewellery brand designed to help people find their perfect wedding ring.
It wasn’t about listing products. It was about guiding first-time buyers through choices like metal, shape, finish and fit, creating something intuitive, personal and emotionally resonant.

Day One: Learning the Landscape
On day one, the students joined us at Delapré Abbey. We introduced them to our tools, process and people. Then they got to work.
They mapped user journeys, sketched interfaces in Figma, built APIs and role-played with our team to explore different user needs. Throughout the day, our developers and wider team were there to mentor and support but the direction was all theirs.
Day Two: Prototyping, Presenting and Growing in Confidence
Every team brought a unique take to the brief. One built a beautifully simple ring builder. Another prioritised accessibility and mobile design. All of them made smart choices grounded in user needs and solid technical thinking.
By the end, they weren’t just presenting websites. They were articulating design decisions, defending approaches and thinking like digital consultants.

The hackathon gave us a real insight into the kinds of projects we could work on in the industry. It was an incredibly valuable experience that has boosted our confidence as we start applying for graduate and internship roles.

Beyond the Hackathon: Sharing Real Career Journeys
We followed up with a visit to the university, not to talk through slides, but to share real stories. Our developer Ifrah Abdi spoke about her path from student to professional, offering an honest, practical view of what a career in tech can really look like.
We also took a moment to celebrate the students’ work. One team received our ‘Best Overall Project’ award for delivering the most thoughtful, creative and well-executed solution. The other groups were recognised for their standout contributions with certificates for Best Group Performance, Best Technical Solution, and Overcoming Challenges.

Events like this provide the most authentic and impactful form of learning we can offer, directly supporting their academic and personal development.

Why This Matters: For Them and for Us
This wasn’t just a coding challenge. It was a chance for students to experience what it really means to work in digital, solving real problems under real constraints, with real people relying on their decisions. It gave them the space to build confidence, take ownership, and see themselves as future professionals.
And for us? It was a reminder of why we do what we do. Innovation thrives when people feel empowered. Mentoring the next generation and seeing them rise to the challenge keeps us sharp, grounded, and inspired.
Let’s Work Together
We’re always open to new partnerships with universities, educators and students who want to do meaningful work. If that’s you, let’s talk.
